La Pigeonnier

Le Pigeonnier is something that can be seen though out the region. I need to do some more research that’s for sure. I thought it was for keeping pigeons for their eggs and eating the pigeons themselves.

However I am told that it was for producing manure for the fields. Pigeon dropping make good fertilizer so I have been informed although I will make other enquiries.

Wilf, funny that I searched pigeonnier on the web and found a bunch of hotels and guest houses named "pigeonnier"...and one of the guesthouses are really expensive Euro1200 per week...funny because pigeon house or pigeon cage means a small and messy space. That's a good looking pigeonnier, I would never have guessed what it is...

Hi Lisi, I did the same search to try and find out more information and I also got a lot of hotels etc.

I will have to ask the locals and get the real story!

Hi Wilf! I have a really excellent book, in English, on pigeonniers from the time I lived near Gaillac (Pigeon-Houses of the Midi-Pyrenees Region). I think I bought it in the bookshop/newsagent at the bottom of the hill in Cordes. It says that there are 1,700 pigeonniers in the Tarn alone, so it could take you sometime to get round and photograph them all. We had a "mule foot" type pigeonnier in our garden that had been converted into a guest cottage.

Thanks Dianne. I wondered if someone who knew the region would know a little more about these wonderful structures. I will need to look out for the book you mentioned or indeed other. I have seen various books in news agents.

Love the look of the structure - do all of t hem look the similar, or are the many pigeonniers constructed differently but do the same thing?

Mostly they are of a similar design, but there are of course some differences. Hopefully I will be able to post more images soon which will show basic differences.
