Sheep Shearing

This weekend was the fete at Roquemaure with a whole host of events starting with a Dance on the Saturday evening. We didn’t manage to make the dance but we went along on Sunday afternoon to see the Wild West show and sheep shearing exhibition.

There was also traditional dancing of the area by Le Poutou de Toulouse. I will post more photographs of this exciting event which I think is great for such a small village to create enough interest to have visitors come and see.

The first image is one of sheep shearing and that is a hard job. I once worked for a very brief time on a sheep farm in New Zealand and I know how hard this type of work is.

Wilf, that guy looks like he's holding a knife ready to slaughter the sheep...eek...and those people in the background, are they dressed up for the ocassion or is that their daily outfits?

He is showing and old type of shearing scissors which does look as if he might be about to make some mutton, but I can assure you he only cut off the wool.

And yes the people a dressed in traditional costumes for the event. In fact they were the dancers whose performance was very enjoyable.

If I had been there I'd be dressed up close to the saem as the mother in the background. I love dressing up like that! Watching the sheep shearing would be interesting. I've never seen anything like that before since I was raised in the city.

YOU worked on a sheep farm in New Zealand? It is my dream vacation (New Zealand...not sheep farming) so was very interested to read about this.
